Four National Parks in 15 days/14 nights – May to September
Hot springs and swimming pools warmed by Mother Nature - Glaciers, big and small - Icebergs - Waterfalls - Lava fields and formations - A Unique Sub-Arctic Lake - and some quite spectacular landform shapes make up this fascinating land.
A tour of this length lets the seasoned traveler linger at the most interesting places and set their pace with few compromises. Most of the areas have hiking trails that quickly and easily get you out of sight of civilization and into the edges of real wilderness.
Day 0: Leave the US from Boston, NY, Minneapolis, or Orlando. Go to sleep - as it’s a short overnight flight!
Day 1 - 2: Welcome to Iceland! Grab your car and head out towards the south. You could take in the Blue Lagoon or do some birdwatching or hiking on the Reykjanes Peninsula before heading towards Thingvellir, and then on to thegeother mal area at Nesjavellir, where you'll spend the next two nights at the new and delightful Fosshótel Hengil.Hike at Mt. Hengill area with 160 km of marked hiking
trails. You can also spend a day at Þingvellir, the largest national park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site
Day 3-4: Travel past the edge of the highlands to the the scenic whale fjord and the saga valley Borgarfjordur and spend the next two nights in the Borgarfjordur area at Fosshotel Reykholt or similar.. Spend a day exploring Snæfellsnes, the National Park in West Iceland.
Day 5-6-7 : North along Rt 1 to Husavik, Europe’s whale-watching capital, through the green horse filled fields of Skagafjordur, to Akureyri, the capital of the north, and onto Goðafoss – the waterfall of the gods. . Spend three nights in North Iceland at Fosshotel Laugar, Fosshótel Husavik or similar.During these days you can visit the whale museum in Husavik and take a whale watching cruise, Explore Jökulsárgljúfur National Park, featuring Ásbyrgi canyon, the echo cliffs; and, if road conditions allow, travel to Dettifoss, Europe’s most powerful waterfall (mid-June – August). Another day you should Enjoy Lake Myvatn, Namaskard hot springs, Krafla lava fields and the unique Myvatn Nature Baths, Iceland’s newest geothermal spa.
Day 8: It’s a long but lovely drive to the next National Park! You’ll first come to Egilsstaðir, pass along the scenic fjords of East Iceland. You’ll spend the night in Hoftn, atFosshotel Vatnajökull or similar.
Day 9-10: Further south, past Jokulsarlon Glacial Lagoon and on to Skaftafell National Park. This vast park is at the base of Vatnajorkull, Europes largest glacier. You’ll have a full day to explore here! 2 nights at Fosshotel Skaftafell or similar.
Day 11-12-13: Glacier covered hills, hidden valleys, black lava beaches, waterfalls, and other wonders of the south coast await, as you travel Rt 1. 3 nights stay in the area of Hella at Fosshótel Mosfell or similar. Many choices, but you could explore Þjórsárdalur valley with the waterfalls Háifoss and Hjálparfoss, the stunning ravine Gjáin and the Viking ruins of Stöng. Also, you must visit Gullfoss waterfall and Geysir hot springs.
Day 14: Head back to Reykjavík for a bit of Urban Iceland. perhaps stop at the the Blue Lagoon. Overnight in Reykjavík at any of our three Fosshótels or similar.
Day 15: Morning to relax, see Reykjavik, do museums, shops, pools or the Blue Lagoon. Drop car at
airport and hop on the plane for home!
